Dog sledding: The northern region
of British Columbia, Canada provides dogsledding adventures during
the winter months. Although, make note that not all communities
provide dogsled tours. The winter months in Northern BC usually
turns the countryside into a white wonderland. The colder temperatures,
the blanket of snow and the frozen lakes.. all create an ideal
landscape for dogsled tours.
The North BC country is very rugged and rural.
A beautiful place to tour by dogsled. It is said that one of the
most romantic and best ways to explore the region is on a sled
harnessed to one or more sled dogs (snow dogs) pulled over ice
and through snow. The landscape scenery is heavenly when covered
in white.
The dogsled guiding and touring companies provide the sled,
dogs, lessons, safety and training required for a successful adventure.
Some of the sledding companies provide accommodations ranging
from extensive recreational lodges to one room mountain huts.
Dogsledding companies vary in sled and dog. Some sledders use
basket sleds and others use toboggan sleds, sprint sleds or freight
sleds. All with a specific purpose and riding style. For example
basket sleds have a seating bed raised several inches above the
surface of the snow and are used often in dogsled races. Toboggan
sleds ride lower in the snow and have an enclosed bed which allows
the sled to skim over deep powder snow. On each sled the musher
stands on the runners controlling the sled with drag and claw
brakes built into the unit.
In Canada the komatik sled is used that was introduced by the
Inuit people. It is a low-slung sled where the musher sits or
lies down, facing forward instead of standing up. Throughout the
North BC region, there are dogsled tours and many Siberian Huskies
panting and waiting to go and explore. There ready are you!
