Fishing North BC: Some say the
Northern British Columbia region provides some of the best fresh
water and salt water fishing opportunities in the province. The
fishing region is in the heart of the BC wilderness. A region
covered in mountain ranges with many, dropping into deep valleys
filled with rivers and lakes.
The spring and the fall months are the biggest months
for fishing the North BC rivers. The rivers like the Peace and
Liard Rivers in the far north, the Skeena and Nass Rivers in the
central north and the Bulkley and Morice Rivers in the lower north
- to name a few - all provide great fly-fishing holes and stories.
The rivers and lakes include various types of trout,
whitefish and bottom fish. Many British Columbia, Canada rivers
are spawning rivers also. Home waterways to fish like Coho, Chum
and Sockeye Salmon. For decades the Bulkley and Morice River were
a traditional fishing spot for the First Nation people. Even today,
the traditional 'gaff poles' are used by the First Nation people
for catching fish.
The north coast mountains butt against the powerful
ocean currents of the Pacific Ocean. The many communities on the
coast have marinas lining their shores. In the marinas are many
varieties of boats including fishing charter boats. The main community
accessing the ocean is Prince
Rupert. It is from here many charters head out for a day of
fishing salmon and halibut.
The local fishing guides, fishing charter companies
and fish camps know the ocean, lakes and rivers of the region.
Some provide the ultimate fishing getaway by providing remote
accommodations in the mountains as a base camp. Most charter companies
will provide lessons, fishing equipment and boats. You must provide
a fishing license on arrival which can be purchased from a store
in the local community.
