| Off Roading
in North BC: The North BC region is vast and wild. The
paved highways connect the communities and the backcountry gravel
roads connects the valleys, lakes and rivers together. Each community
enjoys a backcountry road system, some better signed than others..
some marked as active or inactive logging roads.
The many unmarked and marked gravel roads heading
into the forested valleys and up the mountains primarily service
the forest industry. Massive logging trucks and forestry equipment
use the active gravel roads for transporting logs. When traveling
these backcountry roads always pull over to the side when logging
trucks approach therefore avoiding flying stones creating cracked
windshields and the massive dust clouds following the trucks limiting
your visibility.
Fourwheeling, 4x4ing or off roading is a good opportunity
to experience the region outdoors in its most primitive form.
The routes vary from easy to difficult with large boulders, loose
gravel, steep climbs, deadfall trees, dried up creeks and ranging
rivers.
Offroaders should always have a good backcountry
map book. If none available then they should check in with the
local off roading clubs for road accessibility. Always check the
weather as it can be severe and unpredictable. Some of the remote
multi day off roading adventures include wilderness camping in
the middle of nowhere. Always let someone know where you are going
and when you are expected to return!
The four wheeling tours operating in North BC provide
the lessons, a guide and equipment. Some provide accommodations
and meals. Always good to ask. It is always good to know that
the tour company will prepare properly with good backcountry maps,
gps, winch, communications, rope, safety equipment and first aid.
Some tour groups offer half day, full day and multi
day wilderness camping off-roading trips exploring deep into the
forests even further.
