Island Nature Park is a very
popular year round recreation destination located where the Nechako
and Fraser River meet in the community of Prince George, B.C.,
Canada. The traditional land where the Nechako and Fraser Rivers
meet is referred to as "Lheitli" by the First Nation
people in the region.
The park was first established
in 1983-1984 so to protect the floodplain eco system. An area
covering the sensitive shoreline of the rivers and the many 300
year old Black Cottonwood Trees lining the Nechako River. The
33 hectare (88 acres) park is named after these aging trees.
The park trail system is a
great way to explore the rivers edge and some of the wilderness
areas in the community. At the park entrance is a trail map outlining
the network of trails including the Willow, Grove, Cottonwood,
Limestone, Hazelnut and Dogwood Trails. The trail system is also
part of the 11km Heritage River
Trail leading to Fort George Park.
The park trail system is a popular destination
for many including people who enjoy jogging, roller bladiing,
walking, biking and fishing in the summer and xc skiing in the
winter. Along the trail are some viewing platforms and sitting
benches providing views overlooking the Nechako River.
The main entrance to the parking lot is located
off of River Road. The parking lot fronts a large grass field
sporting an info sign, trail map and pit toilets. The well maintained
grass field is covered with picnic tables and sitting benches
surrounding a wooden picnic shelter. A great location for a special
event.
Not far off is a paved boat launch and canoe launch
accessing the Nechako River. The parking lot is large to accommodate
the boat trailers, cars and trucks while people are out enjoying
