| Bluff
Trail is part of a network of four hiking and
walking trails exploring the northeast slope of Hudson
Bay Mountain in the community of Smithers, BC, Canada.
The trail system is one of the more popular hiking destinations
in the Bulkley Valley region providing a good opportunity to view
small wildlife, birds and the community of Smithers from alpine
mountain slopes.
The Bluff Trail provides many
alternate hiking routes along the way by connecting to other existing
trails in the Hudson Bay Mountain system. Although some hikers
prefer the loop route of the Bluff Trail arriving back at the
same parking lot. Others connect to another existing trail on
the mountain finishing their adventure at a different parking
lot. (good idea to leave a car at both ends you would think).
The trail system is well marked with blue signs with letters (indicating
trail and road junctions).
At the base of the Hudson Bay Mountain, south of
Smithers BC there are 4 major trailheads leading up the mountain
- the Boyle, Simpson Gulch, Bluff
and the Duthie Trailheads. Following
the Bluff Trail hikers can plan a one-way adventure exploring
1 of the 3 routes connecting to the Duthie
Trail. One way trail routes should take no more than 1-2 hours
to complete.
There are 3 trails which make up the Bluff Trail
system: the Bottom, Upper Bluff and Lower Bluff Trails. All are
indirectly connected and eventually lead to the Duthie
Trailhead or loop back to the Bluff parking
lot. The trail explores the Northeast Slope Trail System on Hudson
Bay Mountain and like all hikes requires good preparation and
planning.
The Bottom Trail of the Bluff follows the base
of the mountain trekking, through forests, to Junction T where
you continue hiking underneath the bluff and eventually hooking
into the trail again after taking a left at Junction R leading
to the Duthie Trail. Here some hikers decide to veer right and
loop back exploring the Lower Bluff or Upper Bluff trail returning
to the Bluff parking lot.
The Lower Bluff and Upper Bluff hikes are steeper
and further up the mountain. Both routes interconnect eventually
leading to the 620 metre bluff viewpoint. From the scenic vantage
point the trails lead down to the Duthie Trailhead or back to
the Bluff Trailhead parking lot.
