| Duthie
Trail is part of a network of four hiking and
walking trails, in and around, the base of Hudson
Bay Mountain in the community of Smithers, BC, Canada.
The trail system covers the northeast slope of the mountain and
is one of the more popular hiking destinations in the Bulkley
Valley region. The trail system provides a good opportunity to
view small wildlife, birds and the community of Smithers from
alpine mountain slopes.
The Duthie Trail can be explored as a full day
loop hike combining with other trails marked by blue signs with
letters (indicating trail and road junctions) or hikers can plan
a one-way walk from parking lot to parking lot exploring many
of the connector trails like the Boyle, Simpson
Gulch, Bluff and the Duthie
Trailheads.
The Duthie Trail follows a narrow forested passage,
over wooden and log bridges, above bluffs and through low-lying
brush. From the trailhead start walking to Junction R... and it
is here, hikers connect to the Bug Block Rd. and other routes.
From Junction R on the Duthie Trail hikers can access many other
trails leading up the mountain to viewpoints and scenic bluffs.
From Bug Block Rd (Junction R) hikers can connect
to the Bluff Trail
. It is a small network of loop trails consisting of the Bottom,
Upper and Lower Bluff Trails. The trail leads to a bluff viewpoint
overlooking the community of Smithers.
The more challenging hikes that branch off from
the Duthie Trail leading further into the wilderness are steeper,
longer and explore much more of the mountain. There are trails
with steep grades like the Goat Trail (2 hr hike), Dahlie Creek
Trail (5 hrs) and the Seymour Ridge Trail (2.5 hrs).
The Goat Trail is a higher elevation route, hiking
above the Upper Bluff Trail at 740 m. The higher loop route connects
the Duthie Trailhead to the Bluff Trailhead. The Dahlie Creek
Trail is tougher and longer connecting to the x-country ski trails
in the Smithers Community
Forest.
A day exploring the Northeast Slope Trail System
on Hudson Bay Mountain always should be prepared for in every
season. Always plan your routes, bring and wear the right equipment
and pack the right food for long haul hikes and always let someone
know where you are going and when you are coming out.
