| Skiing,
Snowboarding and
XC Skiing in the Bulkley Valley region of North
BC is best enjoyed on the slopes of Hudson Bay Mountain near Smithers,
British Columbia, Canada. During the winter months the landscape
is white, the tree limbs sag under the weight of the snow and
the mountain trails are covered in layers of powder snow. It is
then that the local ski resort and nordic ski centre kick it into
gear on the mountain.
The mountain is separated into two sections to
accommodate each type of skier. The upper slopes where the elevation
reaches 2331 metres (7647 feet) on Hudson Bay Mountain are groomed
with powder runs entertaining downhill skiers and snowboarders.
The middle and lower slopes are designated for the xc skier.
Downhill skiers and snowboarders have access to
the various points on the mountain via four chairlifts. The Skyline
Chair takes skiers and boarders up 1835 metres (6022 feet) and
to the longest run down which is over 3 km (2 mi) long. Overall
there is 34 ski runs, a snowboard terrain park, serviced by four
lifts covering over 300 acres of powder snow terrain. The Alpine
Ski area has ski and snowboard rentals, lessons and a snow school.
In the winter months the middle and lower slopes
of Hudson Bay Mountain and the massive network of trails lined
with trees dripping in snow are designated for the xc skiers visiting
the hill. The extensive network of cross-country trails tend to
lead in and out from the Bulkley Valley Nordic Centre. The middle
slopes of the mountain are dominated by 35 km ( 22 mi) of groomed
cross country ski trails set with a double classic track and middle
skating lane. At night, the Bulkley Valley Nordic Centre's
light switch is flicked on and 3 km of the cross country trails
are lit up for night skiing.
The nordic centre trail system is divided into
two sections - the Pine Creek Trails and the Chris Dahlie Trails.
Both starting and ending at the lower and upper parking lots near
the Buchfink Lodge.
