Skiing in North BC: In the northern regions of British
Columbia, Canada cross country skiing is one of the most popular
winter activities. Because of the large amounts of snow many communities
have trail systems in place that act as transportation routes
when walking in the snow is to difficult.
Many of the backcountry trails in the communities
become xc skiing trails during the winter months. The summer hiking
trails turn into winter ski trails leading to lakes, waterfalls,
rivers and alpine meadows. In some of the parks located in the
communities there is a section of the park designated to just
cross country skiers.
Some of the communities enjoy active nordic clubs
for cross country skiers. These clubs maintain ski trails and
lodges. Some of the cross country ski trails are well maintained,
enjoy night lighting and lead to nordic lodges. While other areas
have created ungroomed trail systems tracking through deep powder
snow uncovering wilderness peaks leading to warming huts.
Some of the ski resorts maintain xc ski trails also. All of which
cover the lower sections of the mountains. Sometimes the trails
are shared with snowshoers, while other times the trails are designated
just for cross country. |
